Mother Teresa once said, “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” This was certainly true for our teens, who learned new skills while impacting those in the nearby community during the 2024 Catholic Heart Workcamp in Dover, Del., last week.
Our 21 teens and five adults stayed at Holy Cross School with six other parishes from Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
Our eight 18+ teens worked with Habitat for Humanity on three houses throughout the week, where they put on siding and built a shed, among other tasks.
The 12 younger teens and adult chaperones were put on one of 22 other teams to work at a rescue zoo, a horse farm, and houses of the elderly or disabled who needed help to get chores and difficult jobs done like painting, staining, mulching, weeding, or building a deck.
Not only was our group able to impact the lives of those in need, but we were also offered many opportunities to grow in our faith with daily Mass and evening programs like Four Corners and Adoration.
Four Corners gives the campers a chance to go to one of four areas: peace, faith, forgiveness, and reflection. This program gave teens an opportunity to reflect by writing a letter, praying with an adult with what is on their heart, praying on their own, and going to confession.
Many of our group were left with lifelong impressions with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of the value of service. Through perseverance, we not only face challenges, but we grow and learn in the here and now.
In addition, our youth were able to make meaningful connections with those that they met at their job site and those from other churches.
