Father Charles will return to his parish in Uganda, St. Matia Mulumba, after celebrating Masses this weekend.
Our community’s 15-year partnership with St. Matia began in 2008 when Father Charles served on the St. Michael Church pastoral staff while on sabbatical leave, and we were a station of that parish. He often celebrated Mass at Green Hope HS.
Father Charles noted that St. Matia has 23 sub-parishes, “23 Green Hopes,” he quipped during his talks to our parish. The further is 25 miles away from the main church over rough, rural roads.
He said the three pillars of St. Matia are to serve 20,000 families in the parish by providing pastoral care, education, and infrastructure.
Our support is based on what Father Charles and his staff identify as their greatest need. And a little help can go a long way. For example, he explained that when they buy pencils, they cut them in two to have more; when they buy exercise books, they cut them in two to give to more children.
Over the years, Mother Teresa Parish has helped install solar energy panels, equipment lights, a biogas system, and water harvesting tanks. We’ve helped St. Matia buy student desks, school lunches, and supplies.
We’ve also helped them build houses for the teachers and nurses who serve the parish’s four schools and medical center. The most recent project is raising funds to install floors and walls in four “Green Hopes.”
